Local Volunteer Spotlight: Our Spring Intern, KC!

in

KC was first introduced to type 1 diabetes her freshman year of college at Towson University through her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. She is now a junior at Towson and over the years, she has become best friends with two amazingly inspiring women who she always encourages to teach her more about type 1 diabetes. She has learned how to give insulin shots, handle a pump, and understand the challenges of type 1 in school and the community at large.

Through KC’s sorority, she learned about JDRF, and she has volunteered at the JDRF Baltimore Walks and Galas for over two years. They have even led their own campus fundraising events to raise money and awareness for JDRF. At each event, there is a fun atmosphere, and her sorority has the opportunity to connect more with the greater type 1 diabetes community. Each event, for which they volunteer, inspires and reminds them why they are volunteering their time.

Her most memorable volunteer experience was when she volunteered at the Gala this past November in Baltimore. She had so much fun just setting up the different tables and seeing how much planning goes into the event. She loved being able to be there with her sorority sisters, especially the ones with type 1 because, “I knew in a way by just setting up tables and the auction prizes, I was indirectly helping my best friend and so many others.”

KC and little in front of JDRF banner KC concludes: “I feel that JDRF is helping to make every person with type 1s’ life better and eventually wipe out type 1 altogether. “So, why not be a part of creating a world where type 1 doesn’t exist?”
